Kuyt nets hat-trick as Liverpool humble Manchester United

Dirk Kuyt scored a hat-trick as Liverpool humbled leaders Manchester United 3-1 on Sunday, further denting the leaders' hopes of winning the English Premier League title.

Five days after their 2-1 defeat at Chelsea, United were second- best again as Liverpool produced an outstanding performance to move back into the top six themselves.

Kuyt's goals were scored from a total distance of about three yards but the Dutchman did not care as he scored the first Liverpool hat-trick in this fixture since 1990, rendering Javier Hernandez's injury-time goal a mere consolation.

United remain three points clear at the top, though Arsenal in second have played a game less. Liverpool climb to sixth, five points behind Tottenham Hotspur, who were due to play at Wolverhampton Wanderers later on Sunday.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson left Darren Fletcher in favour of the experience of Paul Scholes while Wes Brown and Chris Smalling filled the centre of defence in the absence of the injured Nemanja Vidic and injured captain Rio Ferdinand.
